Spoken Word Honorable Mention
Jasmine M. Tomlin
There was a sound when I walked in the woods,
A mockingbird singing as best as it could.
I had been told it was a sin to kill one,
So I killed it to prove what I did could be done.
Another bird swooped down and spoke to me,
It said "How could you kill such a creature with glee?"
All that bird did was make music for you,
If you would have listened you would have known too.
So many people and so many things,
Think they are the reason a bird should sing
Too many people think their world is right,
They fail to see that some people aren't white.
And when they find out they are wrong
They start to despise the song
There are many creatures with songs to be sung,
But too many people have things to be done.
Remember the next time you walk in these woods,
The bird you heard singing as best as it could.
