Point of View
By: Thomas V. BoyerOur world today is loaded with problems. Racial discrimination, terrorism, and war are huge issues full of conflict, but not full of solutions. It seems nobody knows how to solve them in a way that would be in the best interest of "the people". Well, actually, they do not know how to solve them in the way that most benefits them and is most accepted by others. This is how selfish our world is.
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."
This quote is not only still relevant today, but is the most logical solution for the fore-mentioned problems. It is also the most difficult answer, at least for this time-period. The leaders of the world, of our countries, of our states, and of our cities, have been corrupted to the point of selfishness and a lack of empathy.
Imagine a world where people lived by this simple, one sentenced philosophy. In a world where people empathized with other and thought about the others goals, background, and emotions, the possibilities are endless. If they looked at it from their angle, they may see what the other is meaning and why. Terrorists would be neighbors, for they would see the impact of their actions. Rapists would be friends, killers would be friendly, and dictators would be kind advisers, if they could just take a moment and see the fear and loss of innocence that they cause. We could finally have peace on Earth.
Unfortunately, we may never see that day come. Human nature has been transformed and skewed so people are viewed as "naturally evil". I, for one, believe that everybody is naturally good and that they get corrupted by the darkness in the world today. We lack the capacity to see from another's point of view. Not always, for there are empathetic people in the world, but it would seem that they cannot when it comes to important, possibly life or death situations.
So, we wait, and hope, and pray for the day that important people stop being hot-headed, selfish, idiots and connect with other humans through one of the most basic features of the human psyche, empathy.
