Burning to Read

Join Professor David Lawton, chair of the Washington University English Department, for a Washington University Assembly Series Lecture on January 24, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in Graham Chapel. Burning to Read will address the fundamental importance of reading, having choices and of having books both in printed and digital form. Lawton will discuss the history of reading - which is less than four milennia old, the long historical battle to have free access to books to read and how we read to disagree productively, not to achieve consensus. Lawton will introduce and kick-off The Big Read here in St. Louis by highlighting the themes of Fahrenheit 451 and discussing how the battle to read what we choose is relevant to our own world.

Lawton's lecture kicks off a series of events and public book discussion groups, culminating in early March. A mp3 download of this lecture is available here.
